Join Me in Welcoming a New People's Princess - Part 1 (Labor & Birth)

Telegraph

At 6am on Saturday, May 2, 2015, the Duchess of Cambridge was in the early stages of labor with her second child and was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London.

The drive from her London home in Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital is approximately 9 minutes.

How did Kate evade waiting photographers camped outside? A single silver Mercedes estate car pulled up unremarkably at a tucked away side door at the hospital, coincidentally called the Cambridge entrance and dropped her off. (In the picture below, the red arrow is the Cambridge entrance. The Lindo Wing main entrance is denoted by the red cross).

Two hours after the Duchess was admitted (about 8am), a Kensington Palace spokesman informed the world that her labor was 'progressing normally.'

Kate's labor was being overseen by consultant obstetrician Guy Thorpe-Beeston, who was appointed to the post of Surgeon-Gynecologist to the Household by the Queen in 2014. He also helped deliver Prince George on July 22, 2013. Also in the delivery room was Alan Farthing, a consultant gynecological surgeon and oncologist at the West London Gynecological Cancer Centre at Queen Charlotte's Hospital.

Sources reported that Prince George stayed at the family's apartment in Kensington Palace with both his nanny and grandparents, Carole and Michael Middleton, awaiting the news of his new little brother or sister. (Apartment 1A is denoted by the #2 in the above picture)

The Princess is the first girl born into the Royal family in 25 years, the last being Princess Eugenie in 1990. There have been other girls, including Lady Louise Windsor and Mia Tindall but none that hold the title of Princess.

The new Princess of Cambridge is the Queen's fifth great-grandchild and will be fourth in line to the throne, behind the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and Prince George. It also means Prince Harry will drop down to fifth in line, and every other member of the Royal family will be one step further away from the throne.

At around 12:30 a framed certificate signed by Kate's medical team was placed on an easel outside Buckingham Palace with the same words.

Unexpectedly, at 1:26pm the Duchess' hairdresser Amanda Cook Tucker was spotted going into the hospital. This was seen as a sign the family would, in fact, leave the hospital within hours.

Prince William returned to the hospital a mere 15 minutes later with Prince George. Cheers erupted for the young prince, who has not made a public appearance in the UK since his own birth in 2013.

The pair then disappeared behind the hospital doors to reunite with Kate and the new princess in a scene reminiscent of Prince Harry's birth in 1984 when William toddled up the Lindo Wing steps holding the hand of his father Prince Charles.

At 5:15pm, there was a buzz outside the Lindo Wing that Kate would be leaving the hospital in a matter of hours. Royal protection officers and Kensington Palace staff had the air of people preparing for a major event, but no official news.

The official announcement from Kensington Palace came down at 5:35pm:
