Day three began with a somber visit to the 9/11 Memorial in New York. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge paid their respects to victims of the terrorist attacks.

The royal couple arrived at the World Trade Center site in lashing rain. William held an umbrella while Kate sheltered underneath.

They were told about the building of the memorial, which features two reflecting pools covering the exact footprint of the two towers that were brought down by terrorists in 2001.

The Duchess of Cambridge placed a bouquet of white roses - the State flower of New York - at the spot where the names of the 40 passengers and crew of United Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania on 9/11, are inscribed. Royal aides said the location was chosen by the New York Port Authority, which owns the site.

The victims of 9/11 included 67 Britons, whose names are among those carved into the bronze around the reflecting pools.

A handwritten message on the flowers said: “In sorrowful memory of those who died on 11th September, and in admiration of the courage shown to rebuild.” Each had signed their names - William and Catherine - underneath the message.

Then they were briefly taken inside the museum (One World Trade Center, previously known as the Freedom Tower), where they wrote their electronic signatures next to a twisted piece of steel recovered from the wreckage of the twin towers.

Up next, the two headed to an engagement where they met with teenagers from two outreach programs that provides services to inner city kids - the Door and the City Kids Foundation.

Next, they sat down for a private meeting with eight young people from the foundations to learn more about their experiences growing up in New York City.

Once again, the Duchess flew the flag for British fashion and wore a double breasted cerise coat with black horn buttons by Mulberry over a black Seraphine maternity dress. The wool-silk double crepe coat retailed for a pricey $2,600 but went on sale for $1,300 (it is currently sold out in all sizes). It was part of the brands autumn/winter 2014 collection.

Completing her look, the Kate wore her towering Episode 'Angel' pumps, thick tights, held her suede Mulberry 'Bayswater' clutch, her Cornelia James Imogen merino wool gloves with side bow, and her green amethyst and diamond cushion drop earrings by Kiki McDonough.
