Royal Fans Defend Kate: Fashion Icon for the 21st Century

Author Margaret Atwood has blasted Kate for not being as fashionable as Diana

The Duchess of Cambridge was defended by royal fans and fashion experts today after novelist Margaret Atwood suggested she was not a fashion icon like Princess Diana.

Ms Atwood, the author of The Handmaid's Tale, dismissed Kate, 33, as a conservative dresser. "I think she dresses quite uneventfully," she said.

"I think she's watching her back. "I think she probably has people who pretty much tell her what is appropriate for her to wear.

"I don't think she's become the fashion plate that Diana was, and I think she's probably doing that advisably, wouldn't you say?"

But royal watchers rushed to the defense of the Duchess, who is said to be worth £1billion to the UK fashion industry because of the boost to brands when she wears their clothes.

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, said Diana perhaps dressed more quirkily at times but in many ways had a similar style to Kate.

"You're a bit limited if you're a member of the Royal Family. You've got to dress as if you're going to a wedding every day," she said. Click link for full post from EXPRESS.
