The charity was founded in 1973, and works with about 1,000 families from the immediate area, of which 80 per cent of the families have children aged under five. The Center is one of four run by Home-Start on behalf of The Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Its volunteers visit clients in their homes, helping to cope with issues such as isolation, mental health disabilities, bereavement, multiple births, illness or disability - many of which have a direct effect on their children.

The Duchess was greeted by the charity's chief executive Rob Parkinson and the manager of the center, Dawn Brown. The pair briefed her about the work the charity does to improve confidence and build better lives for children.

She then observed a volunteer training session, in which volunteers are taught how best to offer practical and emotional support in a family's home to help children make the most of nursery or school.

She added an extra layer with an elegant black, tailored coat that had been made by her private dressmaker. We spotted the coat back in 2012 when the Duchess was snapped attending a party at the exclusive Loulou's in Mayfair, London.
